Look after your health and wellbeing as well as you look after your equipment and livestock
Why should you find a balance?
A farm business is nothing without its manager and team.
Therefore, in order to run a productive business, it is essential that we make our own health and wellbeing (physical, social and mental) a priority. However, with so much to do on the farm, we can easily run ourselves ragged.
How often are you late home for dinner, and when was the last time you had a full eight hours of restful sleep?
Issues related to wellbeing can affect decision making, relationships and our ability to keep up with the physical demands of the role. This can result in declining standards, falling productivity and increased risk.
Over the past three years, the nation has made fantastic progress in terms of discussing wellbeing and mental health. There are many easily accessible free resources to take advantage of, including an increasing number aimed at farmers. However, there is still a long way to go in de-stigmatising the topic so that everyone feels free to talk openly.
Dealing with any issues that arise early will reduce their impact on our businesses and ourselves.
